Hm, absolutely not my experience. This lens was was a stellar performer n my APS-C cameras.
If it's wise to invest in an EF-S lens or APS-C Canon SLR with the transition to mirrorless going on, is of course an other question.
you see, ef-s lenses are designed for guys with flat wallets--so we can discuss all we want, ef-s lenses will never be able to compete with canon "L" lenses' performance any investment in ef-s lenses with set you right behind the 8 ball sorry if you disagree with me.
Not sure if I get what you mean. However, I have no issues if we have different opinions. Re the 17-55 mm I can only talk about my personal experience. And for me it was a very good investment. It gave me a very usable zoom range and it was fast (for a zoom). Given all the photos I took and looking at the return in investment, it was a good buy. Though, it was a quite expensive lens.
While I think the optical quality (and pricing) was on L-level, the build quality certainly wasn't. But it wasn't worse than the cameras I used, so actually a good match.
I think Canon (and Nikon) missed the train to offer APS-C L-lenses for the 7D (D500) and give a bit more love to their crop sensor in general. This opened the door for Fuji and other to jump in and attract people who didn't want to go full frame.
there are three issues that go against ef-s lenses compared to "L" lenses right from the start: physical construction, compatibility with FF bodies, and optical quality compared to "L" lenses! "L" lenses are backward compatible with aps-c cameras, in fact i had best result using my "L" lenses with my 40D aps-c camera, but not the other way around--ef-s lenses are not compatible with FF cameras, as we all know that. it is a given fact the ef-s lenses are not as well built as "L" lenses, that is why they are cheap. i have used a friends 17-55mm lens for a few hours and i noticed the construction was horrendous. it was a dust vacuum! knowing all of these ef-s shortcomings, they are not in the same league with the "L" lenses, IMO. if someone decides to get into photography from the scratch, ef-s lenses are not too bad, price and quality wise, but for someone who is used to "L" lenses and has some experience, he/she will find ef-s lenses not too inspiring!
there are some that gripe about 24-105mm IQ (not very many), but i still use mine and i find it as sharp and capable as the day i purchased it (2005)!
