Not to mention the poor selection of M lenses.
Actually for someone asking about shooting "family/kids, plants, travel destinations, and architecture," the "one or two lenses to start out with" that the OP is inquiring about are well accommodated by the M System.
They can then expand within the M ecosystem with small native lenses, or choose any of the existing EF and EF-S lenses in Canon's complete catalog. Threee of my favorites being the aforementioned 40 STM, 50 STM, and 60 Macro.
If you adapt ef lenses to them then you lose the compact size advantage and are better off with an SL2 IMO
Not entirely accurate (IMO) of course. No matter what lens you put on an M Series body, you'll still always benefit from the body's (significantly) smaller size. Here's a comparison between the M50 that was mentioned earlier, the SL2, and say a 7D2...
AS one can see, the size difference between the M50 and SL2 is practically as much as that between the SL2 and the 7D2!
IMHO the main reason to get an SL2 over an M Series is for the SL2's OVF. Just as the main reason to get the SL2 over the 7D2 is back to its size.

If you pop the adapter on then an EF lens it doesn't balance as nicely as the SL2 and that is why I feel it loses it's advantage.
I've had all manner of lenses on my M5 and have never felt handicapped in any way (I always support with the off-hand underneath the lens). I do realize that YMMV though.
In fact I just shot the blood moon the other night with my M5 + EF 400mm f/5.6L + adapter + TC (all handheld). It was indeed very nice to be able to use the magnification function in the EVF, and WYSIWYG made exposure for the changing phases very easy.
I like small primes for this type of camera and the M series is just a bust in that regard. Don't get me wrong I like the M cameras but the lenses just leave me wanting. I was going to buy the M5 but went for the SL2 instead.
I think it was a good move for you obviously.
It had nothin to do with money but rather that I liked the lens selection better for the SL2. I already own the EFM 22mm f/2 and I have the EF to M adapter but I still chose the SL2
And I like the tiny lenses that match the tiny bodies. It's all personal preference!
