Hi Everyone:

I am new to Fuji cameras and lenses and I am having difficulty deciding between these two lenses. Mostly it will be used for travel photography. I take posed street shots. In my last photo excursion I took pictures of children at a slum in New Delhi and previous to that I took pictures of gypsy road workers in an encampment in a small Himalayan town. As I say, all were posed. I am less interested in spontaneous street shots.

My considerations:

The 16-55mm gives me a flexible focal range, is very sharp relative to other zoom lenses, and I can use it for the occasional landscape shots as well. Unfortunately it is heavy and thus less attractive as a travel lens.

The 56mm is a superb lens that is a little less heavy than the aforementioned zoom, and delivers excellent and natural quality. Downside is that in some situations I would like to have the flexibility of a zoom lens, particularly in my location relative to the subject, and in terms of the amount of background I wish to include.

Any thoughts? I am sure there are people who use these lenses and have opinions regarding the above.

I have both lenses.

Just replying to the OP, I think you know that the 56/1.2 will be limiting for your uses. I would definitely not recommend it for your use case. The wide aperture does not compensate enough for relatively slow AF, in my opinion. The lens shines best for slow moving / static subjects in well lit places with plentiful light.

Now, the 16-55/2.8 is excellent for travel/work/event photography where you want an all-in-one robust, reliable package. Besides its weight and bulk, with my X-H1, it can do 90% of the shots that I use my primes for. Of course, primes offer shallower DOF and nicer bokeh for artistic shots. The only wish would be for 2 stops of faster aperture, i.e. 1.4 but that would make it very heavy. But again, you are taking street shots where ultimate blur is not your priority, so I think wide apertures shouldn't be a priority.

I honestly think you would be happier with a 18-55/2.8-4 or a 18-135/3.5-5.6 instead. If you don't shoot longer than 55mm, then go for the 18-55, it's value is praised many times enough through these forums. And at 310g, it's weight is no longer a huge issue.
