Sorry to have just seen this or would have posted earlier.

First, I have to say I do not have any experience with the equipment you have, so I can't point you to the correct control settings.

I think what is going on here is an interaction between the external flash and your camera's preflashes that set exposure.  Most cameras will fire a quick flash at low power right before the main flash in order to judge proper flash exposure.  An external strobe triggered by optical cable needs to be set in some sort of TTL mode that ignores (or makes use of) these preflashes.   Alternatively you set manual flash mode on the camera, which should eliminate the preflash.   I'd bet on the strobe having some sort of adjustment for this though.
