D850 dual card strategy

Is it possible to get away with a small XQD card in combination with a large SD card.

My thinking was that I could set up the SD card as backup and then just format the XQD card every now and then when it is almost full.

If I need to shoot a long burst, this way I could benefit from the faster write speeds of the XQD card, and could get by with a cheaper smaller XQD card.

However, this only works if the clearing of the buffer is not slowed down by the SD card in backup mode. Does anyone know if the camera clears the buffer quickly to the XQD card and then copies it over to the SD card, or will it always copy from the buffer to both cards before the buffer is cleared?
