Quick real world test: GFX50R + GF45/2.8 vs. Canon 5Dsr + 35/1.4 ii

As part of my preparation for my upcoming trip (always test your gear before you go!), I conducted the following comparison between my newer GFX 50R + GF45/2.8 vs my older Canon 5Dsr + 35/1.4 ii.

I deliberately let the cameras choose exposure and white balance. I then processed through LightRoom with adjustments as noted. Lens corrections were applied. I'm mostly try to follow a process that I would follow if I were using one camera or the other, not to make them match exactly.

Tripod, 2s shutter delay, f/5.6, ISO 400, auto shutter speed.

(Happy to post raw files for folks who are interested - just need to identify a place.)

My goal was to understand where I would see benefits in the GFX system in normal usage.

(above) 5Dsr + 35/1.4, shadows lifted +75, sharpening reduced from 40 to 20. WB set to 5k. See right side for shadow noise instances.

(above) GFX 50R + 45/2.8, shadows lifted +75, sharpening reduced from 40 to 20. WB set to 5k. See right side for shadow noise.

(above) 5Dsr + 35/1.4 ii, sharpening reduced from 40 to 20.

(above) GFX 50R + 45/2.8, sharpening reduced from 40 to 20.

I'm still studying these images, but I've reached a few conclusions:

  • Canon likes a warmer WB. (expected)
  • Resolution is very close (expected)
  • Shadow noise is better on the GFX (expected)
  • The lenses are very close in quality. I do see a fraction more chromatic aberration in the Canon 35, but it's really, really slight.

Anyway. Sharing for any additional observations folks might have.
