Third Hand for indoor macro

It's cold outside and the critters and blooms aren't around.  I would like to try some creative macro indoors.  One of my cameras has built in focus stacking, so I am looking forward to getting the most out of that feature.

My question today concerns positioning objects.  Has anyone tried using "third hand" setups normally associated with soldering?  They are stable platforms with flexible arms that have small clips at each end.  Ideally, I'd like the ability to shoot objects as if they were suspended in mid-air.  I found several brands of soldering rigs on Amazon that might help.  I looked at the Wimberley plamp, but that seems kind of pricey.

I'll start with a homemade light box and remote flash(es) to start.  If I find that I really enjoy it, I'll upgrade to a better box/lighting.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.
