EOS R alongside my 1DXii for Volleyball

Not a true comparison, but wanted to see how the EOS R with the 28-70 f/2 did on sports. Full gallery here (https://person.smugmug.com/Sports/20190112-Anaheim-Mens-VB/i-8Wc85hM with both EOS R and 1DXii shots). Used 85mm f/1.4 and 135mm f/2 on the 1DXii.

Shooting Volleyball can be a bit tricky as the key shots happen very quickly. Some thoughts after shooting this event with both cameras:
- Shutter lag: the EOS R has a definite shutter lag compared to the 1DXii. So much so that I had to anticipate the shot and shoot early, hoping I would get it.
- Focus: the servo focus is just not fast enough for this sport and the slowing of burst rate made it necessary to prefocus on players on the side of the net I wanted, and then just leave it there while shooting.
- Viewfinder: didn't have any issues with blackout or frozen images that made it harder to shoot.l
- Lens: loved the lens for this event. Made shooting full court and mid zoom very easy, especially when on the side of the net.
- Keepers: I probably end up with >50% keepers with the 1DXii and much less on the EOR unless I lock in the focus, then it crept up to maybe 30-40% keepers.
- Other sports: I think the R would work okay for football and other sports where the timing isn't so instant. Volleyball, basketball and baseball require a faster shutter and fps.
- This camera will be great for a lot of things, but likely will get replaced when the Sports R comes out as it was just too slow for events like this.
As I said at the top, this wasn't a scientific test as the primes obviously provide better images. The point was that the EOS can get some nice sports shots, but you likely will have to lock in focus for fast moving sports and jump the shutter early if timing is critical.
