Switch Away From Raster-Based Photography—When?

I grew up in the 60s and 70s when we watched in awe as engineers and scientists conquered one "impossible" after another. Knowing what we're capable of, I'm embarrassed that we're still taking photographs made out of discrete, square dots.

How soon before one of you or one of your colleagues invents an alternative that ushers in an era of smooth lines and flawless transitions, infinite scalability and reasonable file size?

Maybe it's not vectors per se, but a technology that will release us from this pixel prison...

Or is it already here and no one has been able to get Canon and Nikon on board....
