Shooting a Marathon for the first time

My son is running in a prominent marathon in Phoenix next week and I'm going to attempt to get some photos of him at around mile 16 using A7III and 100-400GM.  Would appreciate advice re best shooting parameters to try and achieve focus on him.  Will experiment this weekend, but there won't be other runners to interfere with correct subject focus and get highest hit rate.  My camera is set up for shutter button focus when shooting action.

1.  Continuous Focus  Wide focus area  multiple frame per second

or

2.  SF    Center focus area   Single shot drive

or

3.  Possible AF with lock on Tracking?   Haven't had much luck with that in past.

or

4.  Other combinations?

Would  really appreciate some expert guidance on shooting this type of an event and how you would set up your camera.  (this is different than shooting my dog running on the beach per Mark Galer).
