I am not sure I understand. Do you mean the objects on the background would appear smaller because of the stronger perspective distortion of the shorter focal length, therefore less blurred?

Hi, yes, that's the idea - so whatever the background consists of will appear more or less blurry purely because of the enlargement.

Interesting! Do you get different depth of field across the zoom range if the magnification factor and the aperture remain the same?

It very much depends on the zoom.  This one has a macro 'switch' that changes the distance between elements (I think), so all bets are off as to the actual focal length and aperture.
