Does this combo work? Rebel XTi + Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM
Jan 5, 2019
HI. New to the forums. My wife has an old Rebel XTi with the original kit lens that came with it. Want to get her into learning and enjoying photography so I decided to upgrade her one and only lens. Got a Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM, as it has a good focal range and speedy. Received the lens and started playing with it. At first, everything was fine. Thought I'd check out what the photos would look like without the in-lens stabilization (does this even work with the old Rebel?). The camera would not turn back on - I switched it off with the camera off. Weird. Reverted back to having the stabilization back on and it started behaving even more weirdly. It would take one shot then the camera would freeze. Nothing on the LCD to review the shot. I turned the camera off to soft "reset" the camera but the powerlight would not go off. Only removing the battery then reinserting it would bring the camera back to normal. Went through this process several times, as I thought it was a one time hiccup, but it appears to be a persistent problem. Took the Sigma off the camera and put the old kit 18-55mm back on the camera and everything is back to normal again. No hiccups.
Is the Sigma just simply not compatible with this camera? Plan to return it but what would be a good replacement? Something without any of the stabilization trickery?
Insights would be most appreciated.
