Re: You know, when it comes to the OEM flash units...

I picked up the EL-100 to bounce, and have been. Cold-dead on onboard flash destroys the flavor if you will. The swivel and tilt is what sold me vs the 270EX II as I've shot the 430EX and 600EX on my former 5DIII. Bouncing is the only way to go as is remote flashes (which I have virtually no experience with on the other hand, but am curious).

I don't doubt Godox and others represents excellent bang for buck. However, I do doubt their compatibility/reliability with the M50. Were this a DSLR, I wouldn't blink as those systems I gather have a very "dumb" TTL method. They support IR for example and don't use on-sensor AF. I have 100% confidence any third party flash would work on any Canon DSLR.

However, we're talking the M here. Only recently has the M supported TTL, and given my prior M3 + 270EX II experience being sub-par (and this is coming from OEM+OEM), I doubt 3rd party reliability with any M. Based off observations already given from others, it sounds like the consensus is M + 3rd party = fine if you're not using TTL which makes sense. I am however fairly new to external flash photography and embrace TTL as such till I know better which we're not there yet for manual flash technique.

I do appreciate any tips and feedback you have, and will post pictures in time. They're coming out well, but, I'm a bit shy with sharing results this early on. Folks, even on the M board, are not necessarily going to be forgiving. Nor do I assume they'll understand and read that I'm new to flash photography. They're going to see crappy results + EL-100 (even though I don't think they are, I wouldn't be writing this otherwise) and say either I suck or the EL-100 sucks.

We'll get there. In the meantime, any advice regarding external flashes is welcome.
