You can get a good explanation of the process in this tutorial.

The easy way to take 3D images is with a 3D camera with two lenses and sensors or with a "lens" that actually has two separate side by side lenses to project two images to the film or sensor.

The Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 camera is very popular for 3D because of the simplicity and quality of its two 10 M pixel images. You can get one for anywhere from about $350 to over $600 used.

There are also mirror devices that attach to your lens and send two separate views to the camera but some, like this one, don't give you the same inter image separation as your eyes do.

You can also use the cha cha method. Take one photo then shift your body 65mm (about 2.6" to the side and take another image. For subjects beyond about 15' shift a bit further. For macro shift less.

You can view 3D/Stereo images several ways.

A 3D viewer. virtual reality viewer, or 3D TV can be used to see 3D/Stereo images. There was even a post on this tread recently about a phone that shows 3D images. Here is an old left/right side by side image viewer I bought about 50 years ago. It can be used to view 3D cards or you can stick your phone in it and view side by side images.

Here is a new one for phones.

Anaglyph images are another that involve coloring one image red and the other blue then you use glasses with color filters so that each eye only sees one of the two images. These are anaglyph images.

With practice you can learn to view side by side images. Doing this with the right image on the right and the left on the left is hard to do since each eye must be looking outward. It is easier to learn to do it with images that are exchanged left to right and crossing your eyes.

Look at your finger just in front of your nose and your eyes are crossed. Shift the focus to the screen without uncrossing your eyes. Start with small images and work your way up to larger ones. These are cross eyed 3D images.
