Late after noon sun peaking through the trees. This is the only time I have seen the lens flare. Some film directors might actually like this "effect"
mid afternoon sun. Same deal. Shooting the sun through the trees. No flare at all (this is from the Hoh rainforest fyi)

That's exactly what I'm talking about, some crazy flare sometimes, and some gorgeous sun stars other times. It's a bit scary to buy a lens when you know that in some circumstances it can go wild like that. Sure you can use it creatively in a few cases... However if the norm is 18-point stars, in addition to all the other nice features, there is a lot to like. Yikes this is a tough one!
Like I said I only saw it flare like that once. I've used the lens during sunsets and didn't see anything like that. I can't put my finger on it. It really doesn't bother me because otherwise the lens is so good.
