The Sigma camera will be available next year, probably introduced as a non-working mock-up at the upcoming show in Japan in a few weeks. I'm guessing it will be made available for early adopters by Christmas next year.

As far as the Canon 1Dx Mk II is concerned, I believe that is the last of the Canon pro level DSLR bodies. The next Canon pro level body will be a mirrorless body, and it will come in 2019. It will be a Nikon Z7 beater, but Nikon might have their Z1 or Z9 (or whatever they decide to call it) out by the 2020 Olympics. Canon might even have a new 70-200mm f2.8 IS in R mount and a 300mm f2.8 in R mount by that time. I don't doubt they might even have a 400mm f2.8 IS in R mount too. I think they'll leave the longer lenses to people who want to use the adapter. Nikon will basically follow suit.

Believe it or not, I think Canon will quickly become the leader in mirrorless . . . yes, over Sony. Canon is a juggernaut. They are a bigger company than Sony, and far bigger than Nikon. When they get tooled up for the mirrorless war, they will do their best, which means lots of new mirrorless cameras will be coming from Canon in 2019 and 2020. Lots of new lenses will be coming from them too. I think that for the past two or three years they have been getting ready for this, and we're going to see a camera war like we've never seen before. 2018 is just the beginning.

I do agree that Canon is working on opening a can of whoop ass.

They have been working out the bugs with the M series, and the R is a pretty nice camera for a first effort. The big selling point there are the lenses, though.

I rented a Sony A7rII when it was new, and while I found the OVF to be nice, it has at least 2 significant drawbacks:

(1) I find it almost impossible to see the effect of a circular polarizer in the EVF (same thing with Sigma sdQ).

(2) The camera has to be on to see anything in the viewfinder. This is a pain with tiny batteries like the A7RII and Sigma (yes, I understand that the Sony A7rIII is better in the battery department).

Of course, the EVF feed is coming from the sensor, so the sensor is "on" whenever the EVF is "on", also generating heat.

My Sigma sdQ shut down in cold temperatures when my old fashioned DSLR kept working. I have had to keep a Canon battery in a pocket to keep it working.

IF Canon made a mirrorless camera with a 1D series body and battery, I would certainly take notice. IF it was a "1DsIV" or a successor to the 5DsR, I'd be interested.

I'm also interested to see what Sigma is releasing.

I'll be stuck using an adapter for a while, as I do not have the resources to fork out big $$$ for new "mirrorless" lenses.
