How to AF *through* water splashes

Hi -

I shot my first water polo game last weekend (after a few years of shooting swim competitions), and noticed that I often get out-of-focus shots because there's a lot of splashing going on, and the camera will focus on the airborne water rather than the face of the player behind them.

To some degree I was able to deal with that by moving the focus point up in the frame, but that will only go so far of course.

Are there any techniques I might try to get better results more reliably? (Camera is a Nikon D500, in case that matters.)

Thanks a bunch!
