First Shots & Thoughts

I finally received my EOS R this week after what seemed like an eternity, and have had a chance to start taking a few photos! Most of these are star photos due to the short days and working around my job.

So far I'm really enjoying the camera -- I'm coming from a Nikon D7000 that I'd had for a long time, so it feels like a big upgrade in many ways.

Initial takeaways are that the low light focusing is fantastic, and for some of the star shots where there wasn't much to autofocus on, the manual assist features and rear-screen zoom were super helpful.

The flip out screen has also made tripod/night photography way easier to operate.

The camera physically looks great, has nice textures and just generally feels good and well-made. I love the feel of the back of the LCD screen when it's turned in on itself.

I'm glad that the adaptor works seamlessly and is small -- I was a little turned off by the block that seemed to be attached to the Nikon Z adaptor. I do mostly landscape so am starting with a used 16-35 f/4 and the inexpensive 50 1.8. Hopefully I'll eventually get some RF lenses

I'm still adjusting to new muscle memory for the controls (opposite zoom direction!), but overall I like the customization and feel of the primary dials/buttons. I'm pretty much always in Manual, so don't care about having to press the mode button (actually, the mode dial getting bumped on my old camera was a common irritation). Because it's been cold and I've had gloves on, it could be helpful if some of the rear buttons were clickier/bigger, but that isn't a big complaint. Based on advice I saw here, I set the touch bar to Histogram and Level, with the swipe still controlling ISO, but I tend to use the M-Ftn button and top dial more often for that. I don't particularly dislike the touch bar, but for outdoor photography, a tactile feature would probably be easier.

Lastly, working with the RAW files in Lightroom has been so much easier than my old Nikon - I feel that I need to do much less to them, especially in terms of vibrance/saturation. The quality of the images in terms of clarity, resolution, color rendition and dynamic range has felt really nice.
