Agreed - safety net is a good safeguard and you can limit the amount of space used.  Personally I let it use whatever's free on my backup drive - don't see the point of having a backup drive that is used for anything else.

Just to offer an alternative to some of the workflows discussed here - I've found that the fastest way to rebuild after a complete system failure (or loss / theft of equipment) is to use a completely clean OS install - obviously comes as standard if you've bought a new machine.

I can also reinstall all my main productivity software from the app store or original sources

Then I restore my data to where I want it.

I use CCC every night in the wee small hours to back up my documents folder, my images folders, and my email.
