Midtone Contrast—Is Digital Letting Us Down???

Digital cameras just can't deliver good midtone contrast according to the author of an article I read recently. His position is that there's an inherent weakness in the way digital sensors and processors handle midtones.

So, do you experts agree with the idea that midtone contrast is not as crisp as it could be? And if so, what are your strategies for boosting it? Do you just steepen the curve in the middle?

As to what are midtones? If you divide RGB into thirds, the midtones would be approximately 86-170.

(Sorry to say I can't find the article now, but the idea stuck with me because it seems to jibe with my experience.)
