α7R III and eyeAF- hopes for firmware v2.0
1

Howdy folks,

I have been using the eyeAF feature for some time, both with my current a7R III and previous a7R II. I'm jealous of all of you for whom this feature works "flawlessly". Ugh.

In a nutshell, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. I can't make rhyme or reason out of it. Just yesterday I took a couple of shots of a mannequin here in my studio  and the eyeAF locked in on her eye in a split second. Then, I went out to an outdoor shoot with a client, same exact settings,  and the majority of the time the green dot over the eye would not appear. I would try turning the camera on and off, removing the battery, sweating bullets, and none of that worked.  I had to resort to using flexible spot small and positioning that over they eye. I was shooting wide open and many otherwise great shots missed focus on the eye.

In regards to settings, I always use AFC as my Focus Mode and Wide as my Focus Area. I have my eyeAF set up to my AEL and center buttons. I generally turn Face AF off while using eyeAF because I read a while back that that was best.

In regards to lenses, it is happening with all of my native lenses- like the GM85, the Zeiss 55 1.8, and the Zeiss 35 1.4. I should say that it seems worse with the 55 1.8.

I just now upgraded my firmware to v2.0, and I'm hoping that helps. Part of the reason I spent so much $$ upgrading to the III from the II was because of the supposed improved eyeAF.

Any thoughts?

I know that AFC is the right "Mode", but am I correct in using "Wide" as my Focus Area?

Did I read somewhere that changing the Focus Area to "Flexible Spot: Small" improves eyeAF results? This seems bizarre but I'm willing to try anything.

Thanks very much for your help!
