Thanks. Just installed the 'Hyperfocal' App, and a Fuji X with a 56mm lens at 1.4 (no 1.2 in the App) with a subject 3m away - the dof 'in focus' is shown as 42cm.

At f1.0 it's 10cm.

This suggest narrow dof was not the key issue?

At 2m range its only 4cm, but still wide enough to keep a face in focus.

Not sure if I'm using the App right, and also not sure how it defines 'in focus'?

I would suggest you look at Elena Shumilova work with the Canon 85mm f/1.2 on FF.  The 56 mm is close to be the equivalent focal length; it can't match the bokeh of the Canon at 1.2 (71mm) but Elena often shoots closed down a bit.
