X-T2 with 18-55 different sharpness in e-shutter vs. mechanical
1

Recently I obtained a used 18-55 made in Japan. Very good condition. The lens sharpness at 35mm @f3.6 @e-shutter is indistinguishable from prime 35mm f1.4 at f/3.6.

While doing my test, I noticed that the sharpness differs at around 1/100s shutter speed, when using mechanical vs. electronic shutter.

The Setup

  • Fujifilm X-T2, latest firmware
  • Fuji 18-55 lens, made in Japan version, latest firmware
  • a tripod

I setup the 2-sec self-timer to eliminate shake. I Turned off OIS on lens. The first picture is taken at 55mm (long edge) focal length, using mechanical shutter. OOC jpeg file.

The second picture is taken at the same settings, except shutter mode that was electronic.

Result

mechanical shutter

electronic shutter

Same photo, upper right corner:

mechanical shutter

electronic shutter

This effect is most visible at focal lengths between 35 to 55mm with this lens, and at shutter speeds up to 1/100. When I tried it at 1/250 or faster, the difference was minimal, not noticeable (both were sharp).

Turning OIS on/off does not make any difference.

Turning autofocus on/off does not make any difference.

I have also 35mm F1.4 lens so naturally I repeated the test with that lens. No difference, both shots sharp (as hell).

Is there any reported shutter shock issue with X-T2+18-55 combo?
