XF 56 f1.2 - what was I doing wrong - disappointing sharpness

I've been lusting after a 56mm f1.2 for ages, as portraits are my main interest, so when I saw one discounted to $850 at a photo fair, I thought I'd get one.

But first I took a few test shots, and was left so unimpressed I didn't buy it.

It must be me, as I've seen many wonderful images taken with this lens, but compared to my 60mm f2.4 it just not sharp?

I was using my old X-E2, as I wanted a light, carry all day kit.  Aperture priority, f1.2, single AF with a small, but not the smallest, focus point.  I get good results with the same technique with all my other lenses (35 f1.4, 18-135, 60mm, 27mm)  but struggled with the 56.

I even went to the Fuji stand and tried their 57, in case the obe at the dealer was defective - same issues.
