among the must have...

Photographers who are familiar with so-called full frame (24X36mm) cameras have long considered the 50mm a normal lens which defined as having the natural perspective of a common human eyes. However it is a rough approximation because more accurately the diagonal of a 24X36 film/sensor is approx. 43.27mm which will represent what most people would define as normal lens although however natural human eyes' perspective may slight change by how our eyes focus so 70-80mm represents when we look things more closely and 35mm when our eyes are more relaxed at longer distance. But to the point, the 40mm is mathematically closer as a normal lens than the common 50mm lens and for such reason cinematic industrial has been using 40mm lens quite popularly as benchmark cine lens, and camera makers back in 60'-70's have been making 40mm lens as normal lens especially for compact cameras - case in point the Leica CL which is specifically to work with 40mm Summicron-C.

As the cameras went electronic and digital and becomes smaller the 40mm is making a return among main stream camera/lens maker again and apparently Sigma is not going to miss the trend. And the Sigma 40mm F1.4 DG HSM is developed with an ambitious goal to be (and beat) the best and Sigma went all-in with the lens which effectively arranges 3 FLD and 3 SLD glass elements and claimed to have less than 1% distortion and almost zero sagittal coma flare and the result is certain.

The lens is sort of the Zeiss Optus sharp and a built/weight to match it - not the exact kind if high precision mechanical focusing moves but the lens is substantial, well built, and very secure feels when mounting the lens on my A7R3/A9.
