6D: amazing low-light shots! How??

I'm relatively new to photography.  I have a Nikon 3300, and it has been serving me well.

This past weekend, I was at a party and caught a look at the pictures the photographer was taking.  It was at night, outside, with little lighting.  No flash.  The shots looked amazing.

I asked him about his setup, and he told me he was shooting with a 1D and a Sigma 50mm 1.4 lens.  ISO was 5000.  Unsure about shutter speed.  But wow... I don't think I can get shots like he was getting, with my Nikon 3300.

The photographer explained to me that the 6D and his 1D are identical, in the aspects that concern low-light shooting.

My question is... why?  If I had my camera set on 5000 ISO and was using a 1.4f lens, I'd venture to guess it wouldn't come out as nice.

Sorry if this is super rudimentary.

Thanks!
Andrew
