Had my first week with my Eos R. Bought it to replace my 5d3 and compliment my a7iii (which I use with adapted EF lenses).
The EOS R is not perfect but it takes nice pictures; and is good if you have lots of EF lenses, don't want to switch to Sony and want mirrorless full frame.
Here are my 1 week thoughts:
Positives
EF lenses AF is flawless
Low light AF is flawless
Accuracy with F1.2 lenses is sublime when compared to DSLR counterparts.
Servo is quite good; but not as good as a7iii
Face + tracking mode works quite nicely. But can’t track super fast subjects.
Quite like the new FV mode.
Skin tones + Jpeg colours excellent
High iso is ok. Usable up to 8000 for me. Beyond that very noisy, Lags by c1 stop behind A7iii
Video AF is excellent (I only use 1080p)
Touch screen is well implemented
Flippy screen is very handy (compared with the a7iii screen which has limited floppiness)
Wifi transfer functions autosave to MAC or iOS are very good/quick.
My canon 50mm f1.2L now lives on my EOS R when I'm indoors The accuracy/confidence gained when shooting @ f1.2 is brilliant.
Some annoyances (most could be fixed via firmware if canon listens):
Flipping out the screen doesn’t disable the eye sensor for the EVF.
Irksome controls; manual function bar is ok. Can be locked using the lock button. But needs more functions that can be assigned to it e.g. specific AF modes,
Frustrating that some functions can’t be assign to buttons (e.g. auto-iso controls, drive mode)
New quick menu uses the scroll wheels to navigate; would be nice to have option to use the direction buttons
Not quick to change auto-iso min shutter speed settings (I’ve assign them to a custom menu, first page, but still takes several button clicks)
Would like face detection in the zone AF settings
Can’t customise the info button.
Desperately needs an AF joystick to free up some controls.
Some example pics.
Standard profile JPEGS + minimal Lightroom CC processing. Exported from Lightroom at 80% quality (to reduce file size). Please note, zoo pictures are through glass.
