Tamron 100-400 or Cannon 400 5.6 prime

I have roughly $800 to spend on a telephoto lens for recreational wildlife shoots. Small and light is a priority.  I rented a Cannon 400 5.6 and found it dreadfully sharp. It could resolve the hairs in the feathers of birds if they were close enough. These can be had used on EBay for $700 to 800 US.

Im also intested in the Tamron 100-400, which costs the same new, even lighter, zoom flexibility, plus VR which would let me use slower shutter speeds for non flying stuff, which offsets the 1/3 stop you lose in aperture.

Anyone who has had both that can speak about image quality and usability?
