Well, that's the thing. Now, just imagine the same setting, but you need f/4 to get everyone in focus and you have to use at least 1/200s to freeze the motion. Now you're on ISO 6400.

For sports I often have to go to 1/500 or even 1/1000 and that makes the ISO climb like a champ

The "best" part is that if you need to stop down to get enough DoF, the full frame does not help in low light...
