Smaller or larger sensor for macro?

Can i achieve greater depth of field SOOC using a small, or large sensor? Of course, i’d probably need to consider the aperture. I was thinking, my phone was able to produce large DOF at large aperture, but for a larger sensor, you can adjust aperture more, and diffraction isn’t as much of an issue. Has anyone ever compared various formats? I was going to use a phone for super macro but my camera has features that are probably missing on a phone such as being able to consistently adjust focus and maybe continuous shooting which i think is probably more practical on a camera.
