Choosing an ext. mic for two different uses

I have just started using my a6300 for video, and found after recording one of my daughter’s fiddling gigs that I would like better audio.    I also am trying to get some audio/video recording of birds in my backyard.

Would a shotgun style mic like the Rode Videomic Pro work for both scenarios?  When I record my daughter, she is either in a small group gig or occasionally in a full orchestra, but I am roughly 25 ft away from the small gigs, and more like 50 feet away from the orchestra stage.    I would like to record some birds singing at some feeders about 30 feet from my blind.

This doesn’t have to be professional quality, as it is simply for my enjoyment.  I’m very new to audio/video tech, and I just wanted to make sure this mic would do fairly well for these types of uses.

I’m open to any other suggestions, too, but I would like a fairly simple setup and would prefer to keep cost under $250 or so.

Thanks.
