DPP v ACR Highlight recovery

I'm hoping there are some experts on DPP (v4) on here.

I recently took some indoor photos (RAW) and ended up with the flash on full power "burning out" faces etc.

I posted in the retouching forum, the thread and link to the CR2 file are at

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/61926359

There are some excellent results there and GCam has even explained what he did in ACR but I cannot get near that quality with DPP.

I can easily get rid of highlight blinkies by lowering the slider from the top in the RAW histogram.  I've played with Highlight reduction, brightness reduction, changing R and G as per GCam.  I can't remove the shine from faces and I can't get the skin tones right with the result that the faces look 'plastic'.

PP is not my forte as should be obvious but I really expected to be able to get DPP to give me a good result.

Can someone point me to where I'm going wrong or is ACR (or something else) really a better product in this regard?
