Lots of cameras now come with two cameras: a wide angle and moderate telephoto, such as 28mm and 56mm equivalent.

Does zooming suddenly transition from one to the other?

Or are the two images combined to improve low-light performance?

Believe it or not, I can't find any web page explaining this.

I think the reason you can't find a definitive answer is because different companies (and handsets) use their cameras differently.

My Huawei P20 Pro has three cameras, one wider, one moderate tele, one B&W. It offers infinitely variable zoom up to about 10x, using oversampling (i.e. it takes many images, and tries to combine them into one higher resolution image). To be honest the results at 10x are not great.

At wide angle it's an excellent camera though, and I really like the B&W images it produces too.
