Panasonic 50-200 vs 100-400 - South Africa (image heavy)

For a while I hinted I was going to do a comparison post between the Panasonic 100-400 and the 50-200. To be honest I tried to do a comparison and and there just too much waffling. The problem is many people here already shot with the 100-400 and knows how good the lens is and what the limitations are. The 50-200 on the other hand is evolution of the 100-400 lens design and the images just pop more thanks to clearer textures, sharper detail and thinner depth of field.

I still think the 100-400 is the best lens overall if you're planning to do an African safari. There other options like the  Olympus 300mm F4 but it need to be backed up with something like the 40-150mm 2.8.

One thing I like to mention, since the release of the GH5 and you might be able to do with the G80/85. You can handhold the GH5 + 100-400 something like at 0.125 of a second at 400mm at F6.3. In South Africa I was hand holding the 50-200 at 0.40 of a second at 200mm at F4.0.

The other thing I was shooting the 50-200 wide open and I had a few out of focus head shots. It might be approx half a stop faster compared to the 100-400 but the thin depth of field can be thin especially if the subjects are close.

Most of my South Africa raw files are now processed but I'm planning to go back and look for improvements. Images will follow in following posts.

In summary the 100-400 is inferior to the 50-200 but probably the best MFT lens for an African safari unless you're going to a private game reserve like Sabi Sand and the 50-200 is the better option.
