G1x Mark iii - long exposure takes too long to write to card - why?

I am taking long exposures using a neutral density filter on the G1x Mark iii.  If I take a 3 minute exposure it takes about 3 minutes after the shutter closes before the image finishes writing to the card.  A 2 minute exposure takes 2 minutes, etc.

This camera does not have a "Long exposure noise removal" setting (that I can find) so I don't believe that is the problem because it must be off.

I have "High ISO noise removal" set to low.  You can't turn it off.  Plus I'm shooting at ISO 100.

I'm shooting RAW only so I'm not sure Noise Removal would be affecting a RAW file anyway.

I'm using a SanDisk Extreme Plus 90 MB/s card.  Perhaps not the fastest--but works fine for long exposures on my 5Ds.

Any suggestions on why it takes so long to write and how to speed things up?

Thank you.
