Criticisms and Strengths of Minimalism

I've watched a few videos of photographers that discuss Minimalism and simplification as it pertains to Art and photography.  I'm wondering if their are other veins of thought that might promote subtlty and complexity.  As an aside complexity is different than complicated.

I can kind of understand that artists need to get their message across, and simplification and reduction is a way to achieve maximum impact, but is that what the audience always wants?  I know in some of my work presentations I've had to use colors and figures that even color blind people can see.  My approach was they were going to see it if I had to gouge their eyes out.  I mean super simple figures that covered the entire page, with two colors.  Some people like this(they can see it), but I think it is aweful.

Are there any other thoughts on this?  Techniques to take advantage of complex scenes and textures?
