As an absolute newbie I must ask this question. I have a Canon 100mm 2.8L USM lens on a Canon 70D. I put the camera on a tripod and positioned the lens 1" from the flower I was attempting to capture, and put the lens on its closest setting and yet when I looked through the lens I could get no focus on anything, I was using auto-focus and then I tried manual focus, nothing in focus. I must be doing something very wrong.

The specs on that lens say it has a minimum focus of about 12". That would be roughly the distance from the subject to the "tripod mount". The lens would be about 6" or more from the subject. Any closer and it can't focus.
