Manual mode

I have a canon 6D and want to take long exposures using a 10 stop ND filter.

Am I right in thinking that if I take a normal picture, lets say in "P" Mode, make a note of the settings and then switch to manual mode and dial in the same settings. once this is done take a note of the shutter speed and using an app such as LEE filter app set the desired shutter duration, the switch to "Bulb" mode to take the picture after securing the filter. I seem to be struggling with getting the correct exposure so any help would be greatly appreciated.
