Wildlife, Photography and Lenses. Does size really matter?

I've never been one to shy away from much of anything.  So at the risk of staring a flame war or similar I thought I would pose this question or questions.  Is lens size the be all and end all of great wildlife photography?  Are field skills being supplanted by the bazooka on the end of the camera?

There are really two reasons I'm asking.  1) I'm trying to decide on what to beg/borrow/buy or rent for a trip to China and 2) I've seen really great wildlife shots from folks sporting big lenses but I've also seen similar award winning pictures from folks sporting nothing larger than a 200mm lens on a full frame.

The generally quoted rule of thumb seems to be if you are shooting wildlife the bigger the lens the better ... Does that rule actually make sense?

Just a question folks ... give me 5 minutes to don my nomex underwear

Jeff
