Add 70-200 2.8 to D500 or D4S body?

I currently use my D500 + VG + AF-S 70-200 F4 (sometimes 17-55 2.8) to capture images of my often erratically, sometimes predictably, moving 18 months old Golden Retriever.

AF on the D500 is really reliable, with a high percentage of keepers from shot bursts, so all is well by most accounts.

Looking at the images however, I feel that they all are kind of "flat". Very sharp, yes, but somehow lacking life. Also, given that I can only open to F4 with my current 70-200 - on DX - background separation is often quite limited, with disturbing in-focus backgrounds - grass, fences, trees, bushes.

My questions:

- Would getting a FX D4s help here? I could get a good used copy locally where I live. Or would I then look at a trade-off? FX > DX in image quality, but D4s AF < D500 AF?

- Or would adding a 70-200 2.8 VRII to the D500 be a better option? As I would be able to get more background separation, while retaining the top notch D500 AF capabilities?

Any opinions on this would be much appreciated.

I have also been looking into used D5's, but they are still 2x as expensive as used D4s. And probably, for my hobbyist use, not 2x as good.

Thanks and best regards,
