Upgrade from kit lense

I've had some time to shoot with the kit lense on my d3300 and I've decided I want an upgrade. My two options are the Nikkor AF-S 35mm f1.8g or the Nikkor AF-S 55-300mm. The prime 35 apparently has very good image quality but the 55-300 I'm not so sure. Is it better than the kit lense in term of image quality? I mainly shoot cars and street photography with some landscape thrown in. These are the easiest things to shoot since I can only go where my dad takes me since I'm 14 and can't drive lol. So yeah, they're around the same price, my dad says primes are for "professional" with many lenses to swap around with, I'm not so sure but meh. What're you opinions guys?

Thanks.
