VR on/off rule

Is there some kind of rule for turning OFF the VR in a zoom lens?   I've understood that you should shoot at a SS of 1/FL of the lens, so I assume on a DX camera  and for a 300mm lens, that would be either 1/300 or perhaps 1/450 considering the crop factor...so which one?

And then I think I've read that over 1/500 or maybe at 1/1000 SS the VR should be turned off entirely as it could interfere with the sharpness of the photo and isn't needed at a faster SS anyway?  Or is it OK to leave it on?

Could someone help clarify these for me?  Thanks!
