It depends on how you will safari.  If you are self-driving, then you can maneuver your car to get closer to some animals.  Elephants need a lot of room but even with a lot of room the 40-150 is long enough for most shots.  I took a 300mm f4 and the lumix 45-175 to Namibia two years ago and my best shots were with the 45-175, which I used 80% of the time.

But animals are only part of the opportunity in Africa.  Its the people who are also very special, so do bring a good portrait lens, and maybe a small flash like the godox tt350.
