I am thinking of buying a 10d or a 300d. My favorite at this time is the 300d (it’s the price of the camera)
I want to use it fore taking motor/car racing pictures.

Does someone has experience with high speed sport photography with one of these camera’s? Or even better, does someone has some sample pictures?

Nice nickname... :-) Check out my nick....

Ok, I have some experience with sport photography, but to be honest, I think it's very difficult. The thing is that you have to get a very lightstrong (Sorry, i am German speaking, so i don't know the exact translation for "lichtstärke"). However, those lenses are very expensive...

You'll probably find the Auto Focus of the 300D disappointing compared to the more controllable 10D. If you really want fast AF, you need to look at the 1D or 1Ds and a good "L" lens.

But if you can shoot nearly 100% in manual focus or are several meters from the subject, the 300D might work for you.

The R1 rules :-) Did you see the specs of the 2004 R1....180 HP!!!!And the looks are great also!! (Not to happy about the taillight but i have to see it in real life first to make a good judgmet.)

Are there any affordable lenses that are not pro but good consumer lenses?

The 1d is unfortunately not an option for me,(photography is just a hobby )

The lens I had in mind is the Canon EF 100-300/4.5-5.6 USM ø 58mm. The closes you can get on the circuits is about 10-25 meters I think the bikes are traveling to fast for the auto focus system. I think at the best photo shoot points on the circuit they are traveling about 100km.

Do you have any suggestions on shutter speed etc..

You obviously want to do this on the cheap, so your options are limited. Go for the 75-300IS USM. It is cheap and nasty, but it can turn out good pictures once you get used to it.

Camera - ISO400, TV mode, Shutter at focal length (1/300 at 300mm for example) and learn to pan. Don't worry about vehicle speed until they get to 200kph when it can get tricky. 100kph is easy stuff, even for a beginner.

Example taken with a 10D and a 75-300IS (Speed was around 140kph):

Same camera, but this time with a 100-400L:

Thanks, I used the 70-200 F4L. These cars were going about 225 mph down the front straight at Indy.

The trick is to pre-focus on something across the track, use a shutter speed around
1/125 to 1/250, and pan the car as it goes by.
This helps blur the background which really shows the speed of the cars.

Great looking pics.

Do you think a 300d and the Canon EF 100-300/4.5-5.6 USM ø 58mm
can produce simular pics?

Does any one know's a site were camera's and zoom lenses are tested on taking sport pictures

It is F4.5 versus F4.0 compared to the 75-300 when wide open and does not have IS. Would it produce pictures like those? I doubt it. Are you thinking of this purely from a price point-of-view? You really do get what you pay for and it is easy to waste money on cheap lenses that do not perform.

If you are really serious about shooting motorsport, look for a used Sigma 50-500. It is one of Sigma's best lenses and will give you the necessary reach. However, it is very heavy.

Here is an example using the same 10D as above, but this time with the Sigma 50-500 at 500mm.

Sorry for the tardy reply - I was out sick yesterday.

I usually set my lenses to aperature priority of f/5.6 or f/8.0 so there is some decent depth-of-field, then let the shutter speed fall where it may. I usually am shooting faster than 1/500 sec. If it's lower than 1/250, it's time to switch to a faster ISO.

Thanks.
I realy like the second picture.
It would be even better with blurred background.
Did you use af or mf?
