What am I missing with astrophotography?

The way I see it, all that there is, is a technical skill required to capture distant stars. No composition, no playing with light, with the result being quite un-attractive picture of scattered light spots. You've seen one, you've seen them all. They are all the same.

So, unless you are an astronomer, and study astronomy, what's the attraction?

Simply being technically skilled enough to capture exactly what others captured before?
