The obsession with shallow DOF
10

Whats behind the recent obsession with super thin and shallow DOF where some people assume that the faster lens is automatically the best lens? Its one thing if all of your shoots are in very low light and you need a super fast lens, but thats rarely the case. Very few people know how to use a very shallow DOF effectively IMO. They get an f/1.2 or f/1.4 lens and then they want to shoot EVERYTHING wide open, when in reality, most the time it leads to bad photos because the photographer has poor technique. Besides, the average person looking at your photo will never notice (or care about) the difference between 1.2 and 1.4 or 1.4 and 1.8 I doubt many would even notice the difference between 1.2 and 1.8 unless it were pointed out to them. Yet many photographers obsess over having the largest aperture lens available. Thoughts?
