What do you guys shoot in the winter?

Check out some of the work done by Michael Kenna. Wintertime is a great time to take long exposure B&W photographs

Same type of things that I shoot the rest of the year.

In photography, the light is either good or it's not.

When it's not, you have to get artsy, which I'm not good at.

Do like that Russian kid who posted ten world-class artsy shots a couple of months ago.

Two gloved hands holding behind snow-covered backs. Two people smooching in the gloom under a light. A picture of an old door knob. A blurry out of focus shot of some guy shoveling snow under a street lamp. A silhouetted guy walking down a foggy alley. A misty black and white landscape.

Please -- no cat or dog pictures and the only Grandkids people care about are mine. 😀

Or you could post some really bad soft porn on Flickr, which I think they still allow and which drives me crazy.

It doesn't matter. Most shots are bad. Just keep on shooting the same bad shots we all take most of the time.

Looking for some inspiration as fall is soon to end and winter while be here in no time at least up north. I've found myself stumped when it comes to doing photography in the wintertime, particularly on those gloomy days it's hard to get motivated to go outside or find something compelling. What do you like to shoot in the winter? Also, any lens that might get more use in the winter than others?
I like to get shots of holiday decorations, xMas tree lights and what they adorn, street/people, gourmet meals/eating out, the places where people gather, and family.

I am always on the lookout for the "photographic moment" whatever that might be, which is often landscapes. For me, I love to find an antique car or motorcycle, which is one of my recurring subjects...you might have your own "recurring subject" that you choose to pursue. Another recurring subject for me is bridges, especially old ones.

An then is the prime reason I shoot...life goes by so fast, photography is a way for me to savor and document the memories of my life, whatever they might be.

A few from last night, a rare evening at the Ritz Carlton in S.F.

My niece. Wish I had set a faster minimum shutter.

The soft Winter light is excellent for outdoor portraits, so that's what I do. These were taken yesterday. :-)

Hey Martin, Nice on-the-fly portraits! Where did you get the pretty young women? Were they just walking by?

Thank you, Greg. They are all tourists visiting Copenhagen, so in a sense the answer is yes. Each and every one of them are posing to have their must-have portrait taken in front of the colorful houses in Nyhavn. That's where I move in as a silent 'second shooter'. :-)

Not that is some street-shooting. Great idea. One time I was at an event in Mexico and there were these beautifully dressed women who were stunning walking by at a gala of some sort. It was outdoor under a cover and the reflected light was absolutely perfect. I was right there with my XT-2, 56 and 90. (I was staying there and was just walking around with my gear.)

I was too chicken to pull the trigger. Later, Ben K, our resident Fuji and Nikon fashion pro shooter, told me I should have just said, hey - mind if I take your portrait? And then just fire away....

So many insanely awesome photos! For me winter is sports season.

Nice!

In urban environment, snow can give moody nighttime street/city-shots.
