How new is my camera?

I bought a Canon 800D a few months back from a large New Zealand retailer. Unboxed - it appeared new.

I use it as a back up body to my 5D2. Usually, I just leave my 24-205 or 70-200 on it for extra reach, and so I am not changing lenses out in the field.

Recently I shot some video, and because of the lens stopping down I noticed o few dust spots. On inspection, the sensor was (what I would call) very dirty. This didn't make sense because I am very careful with my gear, to the point that my 3 other, much older DSLR's had comparatively spotless sensors.

As for as I am concerned, the dirt was on the sensor before I bought it. Understandably, Canon aren't really interested. They just declare it clean from the factory - I get that.

Here is the weird thing: The shutter count (from Canon) is 736 activations higher than image files I have taken. That is; Shutter count 3697, number of image files 2961. [ I format my cards, continuous file numbering, deleted files are counted. I have less files than shot count]. Canon tell me that operating Live view does not affect the count.

Anyone know how or why the shutter count would be significantly higher (25%) than the number of files I have taken?

[I'm trying to figure out if someone had used this camera before me, hence the dirty sensor].

[About 10-15 MP4 files, included in the file numbering].

Thanks for any ideas.
