Any hope for a new real SUPERzoom compact (TZ/ZS series)

Panasonic has never made a bad travel zoom camera. They are all pretty darn good.

I'm pretty certain that if you wait long enough they will create a new model that is measurably better than the last one. When that camera is finally announced you will pay the highest price possible for it. The real questions are.... how much better, and how much are you willing to spend for it?

If you get tired of waiting, just select one of the above based on the features you want. There are some pretty incredible bargains available among some of the more recent models.

Amazon currently has the ZS60 brand new with memory card and case for $250, and for $200 in refurbished condition with case . A brand new ZS70 will cost you $450, and an even newer model would probably cost you more than that.

If you get really impatient you might want to check out travel zooms from Canon and Sony, but I don't believe they make anything better, or cheaper than Panasonic does.

Here is a table of the most recent Panasonic travel zoom cameras. You can pretty much use any one of these and get good results. The only difference is features and capabilities.

You have listed the ZS50 (TZ70) as having no EVF which is incorrect. It has one for sure.

Thanks for the correction Dave.

This makes the ZS50 an even better deal than I thought it was.

It's a great deal in the UK that's for sure. The Panasonic refurb shop on ebay has them for £149.99 - an absolute steal

What do you guys think, will there still be a true ultracompact superzoom (meaning that at least 30x-40x zoom) model from Panasonic? The Lumix DC-ZS70 (TZ90) is last one in the series, since those TZ-100 and TZ-200 offer only 10x and 15x zoom.

I shoot most of the photos with smartphones nowadays, since the picture quality has become very high (for my purposes) on smartphones. The only thing I love my Panny TZ series is the wonderful reach of the optics in such a small pocketable camera, something that smartphones can not offer. So I still have had some hopes, if Panasonic would make a new superzoom compact (and make it really _compact_ all those thingies pop-up flash, tiltable LCD screen, extra viewfinder etc are just nonsense that could be left out in order to make the body and weight of the camera as small as possible).

So, what do you honestly think? Still hopes for this, or is Panasonic now just continuing in the path of TZ100 and TZ200 with bigger sensor but smaller zoom?

Currently these are the nicest picks from all the manufacturers on this kind of camera I am looking for to update my _old_ TZ-series :

But honestly, I’ve been waiting patiently for Panasonic to make one. Not sure if I’m just a fangirl or if they actually make better compacts. I think it’s the latter. I think they generally have better quality on the long end, better video, and better focusing.

I would go with a Sony if Panny doesn’t make one, but Sony isn’t doing it either, at least for now. Honestly, you’d think I d be happy that Canon and Nikon are going long, but I’m not. I’ve tried their compacts before and not eager to try again.

I think the ZS70 is about the best you can do right now. If you are happy with Panasonic, then it just doesn't make much sense to switch to Sony or Canon for a slightly longer zoom range. 24-720mm is an awful lot for such a small camera that has a built in EVF. That range should cover 99% of what you want to shoot, and still provide something you can throw into your jacket pocket.

If you are waiting for a ZS70 upgrade.... then you might have a long wait. The superzoom segment has pretty much moved to larger sensors with less zoom range, or to large and bulky hyperzoom cameras with small sensors and huge zoom ranges.

Personally, I really like those 10X and 15X zooms on the ZS100 and ZS200. It just brings me back to my 10X TZ1... but with much better image quality, a wider starting point, and a very similar cost when adjusted for inflation.
More compact and better IQ is the Casio ZR850 (25 - 900mm equiv) allbeit Caso stopped all camera production :-(

So get one while you can!

Us TZ users know that the TZ8-10-12-25 generation was the best Pany ever produced. All that came after was a step back.

Actually the standard from which many other ZS/TZ's were gauged was the classic ZS3/TZ7. I think it's the first time there was a distinction between regions, and the start of the confusing names ZS3/T7.

That one should of warned us about the coming confusion. . All previous versions only had the TZ prefix.

ZS3 had stereo mic, good video (for it's time) and excellent jpegs :

I agree this is still my favourite camera, it’s slow and trustworthy and is easy to use in my old age.

Thanks

I only mention the FZ1000 to Chris Lumix , because he stated that one could crop from the TZ100/200 (forgot which one) and get similar results from the longer zoom reach of the 1/2.3" sensor ZS/TZ's.
Indeed. But the FZ1000 is not a 1/2.3" sensor!
I was fully aware of your question..hint: it's in the title :)

Mentioning of the FZ1000 was just to point out that , maybe with that good lens, the 1" type sensor could give similar results to the ZS60/70.

But again, I was not referenced to you, but to Chris.

That's why i posted my images. Chris also mentioned the long end of the lens was not sharp.
Ah no. Perhaps I wasn't specific enough? It's not sharpness that's the problem but noise and artefacts.
I disagreed, and showed samples to show why I think it's sharp.

i also think we will see a newer ZS70 with smaller sensor within next few months.

time will tell

Those who owned and used them...they know.

With some editing, i can get my ZS60 to come super close...and the ZS60 is better at high ISO.

This is at full telephoto (720mm) and 1/80th shutter speed.

But was shot in lowish light. I needed ISO 3200 to get even 1/80th shutter speed.

Now, who would shoot these tiny sensors at such High ISO?

Me :)

Newer ZS/TZ's offer:

WAY faster to AF, shot to shot, assignable function buttons, control dial, control ring around lens, better, higher resolution LCD...it has an EVF....these things are better. Of course video has vastly improved. 4K now, with 8MP stills extracted from the video.

Oh and Marty..the TZ8 was not that good a camera. They did make a bad one :)

I had ...let's see...TZ1/3/5/8/ZS3/19/20/30/60...aw...that's only nine.

I doubled that with the FZ's I owned :)

Look for another 1/2.3" ZS/TZ this Jan/Feb

So you are saying hang on to my TZ 5 and TZ19?
No, definitely not. Those were not the best of the bunch.
ZS3 was king. Best of the Best, back then...but even now will hold up well.

CCD sensor back then. Also it was a Multi Aspect ratio sensor. Yes, like the LX series, just smaller sensor.

The newer ZS/TZ's abandoned that feature :(

It's I.Q. Competed at times with my LX3!
