Canon 77D external flash not firing on hotshoe

hi,
I've just bought a 77D and cannot get it to fire a Sigma 500DG Super when directly mounted on the hotshoe. I also tried an old manual Vivitar 285HV and that doesn't fire either. They don't fire at all, and the 77D doesn't recognise a flash is attached.
Both flashes work perfectly well when attached on my Cannon 400D. Even the HHS works on the Sigma.
The only way I can get the the Sigma to fire from the 77D is when I attach a Yongnuo YN622C TX to the 77D and the Sigma to a YN622C. The ETTL works through the Yongnuo.
Did Canon radically change the hotshoe design? I notice that the Sigma 500DG Super and the Vivitar have plastic hotshoes, whereas the Yongnuo has a metal surround.
Any idea whats going on?
